The Russian doll

Russian dolls are nesting dolls or Russian tea dolls. “Matryoshka” is the official name of the Russian doll. Matryoshka is a set of wooden dolls. There is one doll inside another. There can be from 3 to 10 dolls inside the biggest doll. Vasiliy Zvyozdochkin and Sergey Malyutin designed and carved the first Russian doll in the 1890s. They called it “Matryoshka” not because of the Russian word “mum”, but because of the Russian name “Matryona”. They showed their doll at the World Exhibition in Paris in 1900. People loved it and the doll got a bronze medal.
Russian dolls wear traditional long dresses, sarafans. They are usually very colourful. They also wear a headscarf, but they usually do not wear any shoes.

Matryoshka is more than just a doll. It is a symbol of Russia, famous all over the world. People from other countries always bring Matryoshka dolls as a souvenir from Russia. Today, people make Matryoshka dolls in a small Russian town Semyonov, in the traditional craft village.
