It's nice to see our young artists here. We are happy that our drawing contest has attracted your attention. According to the rules, each of you needs to take a card from this box. The number on the card refers to the number of your seat. Please don't take someone else's place. As for the theme, the jury has chosen water in our life, which means your pictures need to illustrate the role of water in our life. You can draw your pictures with whatever you like, pencils, oils, watercolors.

Hi, Amanda, Jessica calling. You must be at the party at the moment, and I hope you're wearing that fantastic blue dress we bought yesterday. Are you? Anyway, I need your advice. My parents suggested that we go on a holiday to celebrate my birthday somewhere outside the city, either to the aqua park or to the mountain lake. They want me to choose. I'm really in two minds. On the one hand, the aqua park is more fun, but what would you choose if you were me?

- Hi, Mike. What brought you here to the medical center? Is everything all right?
- Oh, Linda, yes. I'm fine. It's my granddad who has got a problem. Severe pain in his stomach. The doctor is examining him at the moment. And you?
- I'm fine too. I'm here with my cousin Elle. She's so afraid of dentists that she always skips her annual check-ups. However, now she cannot put off her visit to the dentist.
- Does it hurt?
- Elle says it does. Awfully. She wasn't able to sleep at night. My aunt called me in the morning and asked me to go with her.
- To stop her running away from the doctor?
- Sort of.

- How about an excursion this weekend, Kate? We have been here for two weeks but we haven't seen anything except for the school library.
- Good idea, Fred. I've heard there's a big aquarium in this city.
- It's near the port, too far from the centre. We won't have enough time to get there and back. What I suggest is a guided walking tour in the historical centre.
- It’s offered by the Student Center, isn't it? I wouldn't mind it either. I'll contact them today to reserve two places for us in the group, shall I?
- Yes, thank you. I also thought about a sea boat trip, but everything is reserved for a month ahead.

Good afternoon. Today we have asked five people to give us a short interview and share their opinions about studying a foreign language abroad. Now we would like to present their opinions to you.
Speaker A
I learned Italian as a foreign language, and last summer, I went to Italy as an exchange student. I stayed with a host family, not in a student's hostel, and that was a great mistake. The people I stayed with were an elderly couple without children. They wanted me to spend all my free time with them and kept asking lots of questions. They didn't want to accept the fact that I needed time to do my homework and to be on my own. I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay with a host family.
Speaker B
I spent last summer abroad as an exchange student in Germany. It was a great experience. I think I returned home an absolutely different person. I learned so much. I was staying with a host family. And my hosts never treated me as a child, but as a responsible person. And I had to become responsible. I got used to coming home on time and not later than I had promised. I think I've become more independent and confident in myself and the choices I make.
Speaker C
When I was getting ready for my trip abroad, the most important question for my parents was where I would stay. I wanted to choose a student's hostel, but my parents were against it and I went to a host family. It was the right choice. My host's for a lively couple with two kids. Señora Clara cooked fantastic pastas and pizzas. I had never tasted anything like it. And I loved her desserts, too. She used to say that it's important to taste the country whose language you're learning.
Speaker D
Well, I thought I could speak Spanish pretty well before I went to Spain as a student. In the classroom, everything was more or less fine, but I couldn't understand people on the streets. They were speaking very fast and pronounced words indistinctly. So I had to ask the same question several times before I was able to catch the answer. The locals also used words that are only used in their particular region. I haven't seen them in my textbook.
Speaker E
It was my parents' idea to send me to France for the language course. I'd never left home for so long, and I thought I would feel homesick and lonely. But it was nothing like that. There was actually no time. From morning till 2 p.m. we had classes, and then we went on excursions or trips and had other activities. Every other day we had contests or concerts, and in the evenings there was time for partying and having fun. It was great and I never felt bored.

- Thank you for taking part in our survey. I really appreciate it. We're doing it as part of our course, so it's really important for us.
- It's OK. I'm glad to help. Do you need my name for the survey?
- No, I don't. It's anonymous. All I need is your age.
- I'm 30.
- Right, 30. Do you work or study?
- I work, of course.
- And what's your job?
- I'm a firefighter.
- Really? A firefighter who extinguishes flames?
- Yes, my job is to stop fire from burning.
- You must be very brave.
- You know, we often work with doctors and police officers. They are the real heroes.
- Do you exercise a lot to be in shape?
- Yes, it's part of my job.
- And what sport do you like playing?
- Most of my colleagues enjoy football, but I don't like it very much. My favorite sport is skiing, and I go skiing quite regularly. That's why I usually have vacations in winter, not in summer.
- I see.
- Skiing is a very popular sport in my native country.
- And you are from...?
- From Canada. Children start going skiing at a very early age there. There's lots of snow in winter, and they are out having fun.
- Right. When did you leave Canada?
- When I was 16, first we moved to Austria and then to America. It was not easy to get used to new places and new people. I missed my old friends a lot.
- I see. And what about music? Have you got any preferences? How do you feel about modern pop music?
- I hate pop music and never listen to it. I listen to rock. There is something in rock music which makes me feel very alive.
- And a hobby?
- I don't know. When I was small, I assembled Lego and drew a lot. And now, reading probably. You may not believe it, but when I start reading a good book, I can't stop and I keep on reading it up to the end. Sometimes the whole night through.
- Okay, I'll write it as reading.
